Mountain Flying Course
One of the joys of flying in Colorado is the opportunity to fly into some of the most majestic mountain areas. As most pilots are aware, this opportunity is not without danger and risk. Our course is taught by Frank Magnussen, our instructor with over 1200 hours of mountain flying time. He has ATP ratings in both single and multi engine airplanes and has taught mountain flying to private individuals, the AOPA Air Safety Foundation and the FBI. The Course Lecture: Our Mountain Flying Course consists of a four hour group ground session where you will learn the basics of how to fly in the rocky terrain. You will learn the fundamentals of Performance Considerations, Developing Go-No-Go Judgment Skills, Mountain Flight Planning and Developing Confidence for Mountain Flying. Cost is $50.00 for the lecture. Required reading is Mountain Flying by Sparky Imeson available at Springs Aviation for $20.00 + tax.
Each student will then schedule their 4-5 hour individual flight on the following route: Colorado Springs to Salida, Salida to Aspen via Haggermann Pass, Aspen to Glenwood Springs, and Glenwood Springs to Leadville. After receiving a certificate for landing at the highest airport in the U.S, you will then head back to Colorado Springs. All regular instructor and plane rental fees apply.
