Stage Check 2 Private Pilot Requirements

 Ground Requirements

1)      Plan a 1-way trip from COS (Colorado Springs) to LIC (Limon).  Plan the trip using the appropriate weather conditions for that day.  Be ready to discuss how you arrived at your calculations, including winds, headings, cruising altitude for the flight, the airspace you will be flying in, and the weather minimums for each segment of airspace.   I want to see your completed plan, not watch you plan it here.

2)      Have all appropriate VFR Sectionals, Airport Diagrams, Airport Frequencies, AFD’s etc. ready for this flight.  Remember, AirNav (www.airnav.com) can help you with some of the Airport information.

3)      Ask the controller (during your Clearance) for VFR Flight Following.  If your altitude and their workload permits, Denver Center will provide you with Radar Service.

4)      ABSOLUTELY know the runway direction and length at your destination airport.  Check the NOTAMS to assure the runways aren’t closed.

5)      Make sure you know how to get the current wind conditions (AWOS or the wind sock) BEFORE you land.  What does this airport offer?

6)      Have 5-6 good checkpoints along the way.

7)      For the return trip expect to track to the Black Forest VOR using your NAV Radio.  We might use a GPS as well.  Don’t be surprised if you are under the hood for a while during the return trip.

This trip should take about an hour and 15 minutes round trip once we are airborne.
