Springs Aviation Weather Minimums

Pilots and Students who rent aircraft from Springs Aviation are limited to the following weather minimums:

·        Ceiling and Visibility.  Day VFR minimums for the traffic pattern at COS are 1,500 ft ceiling and 3 miles visibility.  Day VFR minimums outside the COS traffic pattern are 2,000 ft ceiling and 5 miles visibility.  Night VFR minimums are 2,000 ft ceiling and 5 miles visibility at all airports.

·         Wind Limitations.

Student Pilots:  The maximum allowable surface wind for takeoffs and landings is 20 knots, including gusts.  The maximum tailwind component is 5 knots.  The maximum crosswind component is 10 knots.

Private Pilots:  The maximum allowable surface wind for takeoffs and landings is 30 knots, including gusts.  If the wind is greater than 30 knots, takeoffs will be suspended and landings will be as soon as practicable.  The maximum tailwind component is 5 knots.  The maximum crosswind component is 15 knots.  When calculating winds the gust factor must be included!

·         Density Altitude (DA).  When the DA is 9,500 feet or above takeoffs will be suspended for ALL single-engine aircraft regardless of the airport you are at.

·         Lightning and Thundersorms.  When lightning is observed within 10 miles of the airport, all flights shall cease.  If a thunderstorm is within 10 miles of the airport, al flights shall cease.

·         Turbulence.  All flight will cease in reported areas of severe turbulence.
